Representation

AFGES has a mission to represent students and young people. We attend various councils and represents students through dozens of student volunteers in our network.

AFGES statutes set out our fundamental values. We defend pluralism while respecting humanist, republican and European values.

AFGES internal governance is based on a federal model: it is AFGES Board of Directors, made up of representatives from each association & branch, which is sovereign and decides on the positions adopted by the AFGES. By students, for students, these positions are then defended by the Board & the elected representatives of the federation in the councils and with the public authorities. The guiding principle of AFGES can be summed up in one sentence: Working for a University accessible to all, in the best living and working conditions

How do we represent students?

We represent Alsace's students at different levels:

The component councils are the decision-making bodies of each component (faculty, UFR, school, institute). Every two years, students elect representatives to these councils.

AFGES federal aspect enables it to rely on more than fourty associations: it is these associations and their elected representatives, within the components, who carry the federation's positions.

With these elected representatives, AFGES enables dialogue and close collaboration between component student representatives and representatives on central councils.

The central councils are the University's governing bodies. There are two main councils, in addition to a multitude of other bodies and commissions.

  • CFVU, Commission des Formations et de la Vie Universitaire (Training and University Life Commission)

The CFVU is a body that brings together representatives of teaching staff, BIATSS (librarians, engineers, administrative and health staff, etc.) and students. Student representatives are divided into colleges, according to their field of study (scientific college, human & social sciences, health, law, economics & management).

The CFVU votes on all matters concerning study conditions (assessment of knowledge and skills, “MECC”) and university life. It is chaired by a student: the University Life Vice-President.

All decisions, particularly MECCs, taken by the component councils, must be validated by the CFVU, which has supervisory powers.

Today, of the 16 student seats, 9 are held by AFGES elected representatives.

  • University's Board of Directors

The University's Board of Directors is the university's main decision-making body. For example, it must approve all aspects of Unistra's finances: tuition fees, budget, expenses, etc.

There are 6 student representatives on the committee, including 2 are currently members of AFGES.

CROUS of Strasbourg has 7 missions:

  • Housing (student residences)
  • Scholarships
  • Social aids
  • Student employment
  • Catering (university restaurants)
  • Culture
  • International

AFGES also represents students on the Strasbourg CROUS Board of Directors, which has 6 student representatives. AFGES currently holds 3 of the 6 student seats on CROUS of Strasbourg..
AFGES, by joining FAGE (Fédération des Associations Générales Étudiantes), represents Alsatian students at national level.
